I recently provided a soundtrack for the Triptych installation by Poid Mahovlich. Additional scripting aid was provided by Talia Tokugawa. The project was commissioned by Princeton University for their Princeton North Campus sim in Second Life. You can visit the installation by clicking here. Please set to midnight, switch music ON and sounds to max in your Second Life mixer.

The installation features three environments, which are tied together musically by a soundtrack on the landstream. As you move around the different spaces, elements of the in world audio ( make sure you have “sounds” up ) interact with the music. In fact the music is designed to sync with some of them. Here is a short machinima I made of the installation which features the soundtrack and some of the in world sounds :

It’s a very interesting installation with many layers of symbolic meaning and the subjects it touches upon highlight some of the troubling elements of online social communities in general, particularly the community of Second Life. These loosely form the themes of the three spaces – Elitism, Gossip and Binary.

Composing music for this installation was theraputic for me, in that it allowed me to lay out and explore the emotional challenges of dealing with these themes through music and hopefully rationalise them in some way.

The Grand Opening party is on Sunday 24th August 2008 at 6pm SLT with Live Music By Grace McDunnough from 6 – 7 PM SLT. Hope to see you there !
